Sooners sweep Seattle into Spokane

NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team won their first win of the season when they beat Seattle 3-0 on day two of the Gonzaga Invitational.

OU (2-3) defeated Seattle (1-6) 25-20, 25-17, 25-17. The Sooners outperformed the Redhawks .302 through .132 for their best offensive performance of the season.

OU also led on kills (42-26), digs (28-24), assists (40-25), blocks (9.0-2.0) and service aces (6-2).

Megan Wilson recorded her fifth game in a row with at least 15 kills when she tallied 17 on a .353 clip. Paige Anderson was just short of double digits when she got nine kills on a team-best .375 clip.

Peyton Dunn recorded her fifth match with at least 30 assists and 35.

Callie Kemohah and Olivia LittleJim took the lead defensively with seven kills each. LittleJim also got six kills that day. Of the team’s nine blocks, Kelsey Carrington supported five, with Anderson and Wilson getting three each.

OU took the first set, 25-20. In the first 34 points of the game, the two teams saw 13 draws and five changes in leadership. The Sooners took control with a 3-0 run and three straight kills from Anderson, Dunn and Wilson to take a 20-17 lead. A 5-3 run ended the set while Carrington and Kristen Birmingham completed the first set win with a block.

In the second set, the two teams exchanged points as they tied 12 of them all. Kills from Carrington and Wilson followed by a Carrington and Curtis block gave OU a 15-12 advantage. Seattle used its own run to draw within two at 17-15, but an 8-2 run by the Sooners finished it 25-17. Wilson dominated the back half as she scored four straight kills to win the second set.

In the decisive third set, the Sooners dominated with 25:17. OU opened the set with a 5-0 run and increased it to 9-1, forcing a Seattle break. The Redhawks fought their way back, forcing an OU timeout after running a 4-0 run to reduce the Sooner lead to 13-8. Anderson was dominant in the last set for the Sooners, recording three straight kills to take the Sooners to a 21-13 lead. Curtis earned the solo block to end the match and give OU his first sweep of the year.

The Sooners will end the Gonzaga Invitational against hosts Gonzaga on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT. The game is streamed for free on the WCC network.
