(NEW YORK) – At least 17 people were dead and hundreds more were hospitalized after an explosion in a military camp in Equatorial Guinea on Sunday evening, according to the country’s health ministry.

It was not immediately clear what was causing the explosions in the city of Bata, which sent smoke into the air and destroyed several buildings.

Residents walked through rubble to find survivors while others helped transport the wounded to hospitals.

The Ministry of Health said three hospitals were treating 420 injured as of 8:40 p.m. local time.
