SPOKANE, Washington – Parts of the Inland Northwest are awakening to freezing temperatures and dangerously cold winds. The wind chill in Omak on Sunday morning was as cold as -17. From Oroville in the south to Ephrata and Moses Lake in central Washington, wind chill ranges below zero. In Counties Okanogan, Douglas and Grant there is a wind chill warning until noon on Monday.

Winds blow 30 to 40 miles per hour down the Okanogan River as Arctic Air rushes in from the north. In northern Idaho, gusts of wind will begin at around 30 miles per hour during the day as the cold air from Bonners Ferry slides down the valleys through Sandpoint and into Coeur d’Alene. Sub-zero wind chill can cause frostbite quickly, so in this type of weather it’s important not to expose your skin to the open air, especially the extremities such as your nose, ears, and hands.

The cold air will sink in most of the Inland Northwest by Monday morning and hang around for most of the week ahead. Temperatures will threaten minus degrees on Monday night and Tuesday night without taking wind chill into account. The highs for much of the inland northwest will remain between 3 and 15 degrees for the next few days. Around Thursday and Friday there will be a little warm-up phase, with the highs reaching back to the 20s.
