SPOKANE, Wash. – Two people who rode a hose on the Spokane River were rescued Friday after being thrown into the river.

The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) said they were riding a hose near the Downriver Golf Course when it hit a rock and hurled them into the river. Witnesses called 911 after hearing her call for help and eventually pinning her to a rock in the middle of the river.

Using kayaks and special equipment, SFD was able to reach the two people in fast water and get them out safely. Both were brought to safety by the SFD’s technical rescue team due to the impassable terrain and the dangerous incline.

The inner tubers were picked up by SFD paramedics for medical assessment. Neither of these required extensive medical treatment.

Although both people were wearing life jackets and holding onto rocks until help arrived, SFD said not all people are this lucky and many incidents do not end as well.

They wanted to remind people to follow some safety guidelines when engaging in such activities. These steps are to plan a trip as much as possible; researching local hazards and weather; create and share a float plan; bring the necessary safety equipment; Dipping dress; and don’t go alone.
