Seattle Kraken fall 4-3 to Detroit Red Wings in first shootout

DETROIT (AP) – Adam Erne scored the decisive goal in a penalty shoot-out and the Detroit Red Wings won their fourth game in a row by defeating the Seattle Kraken 4-3 on Wednesday evening.

Detroit won the shootout 2-1, Dylan Larkin also converted.

Robby Fabbri, Vladislav Namestnikov and Lucas Raymond scored regularly for the Red Wings.

Ryan Donato had two goals and Vince Dunn scored the other for the Kraken.

Thomas Greiss made 21 parades for Detroit in his 150th career victory. Seattle’s goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer stopped 23 shots.

The Red Wings took a 3-2 lead at 6:30 am in the third period when Raymond, who leads the NHL rookies with 10 goals and 22 points, spun in the slot and shot the puck past Grubauer.

Seattle equalized with Donato’s second goal of the game. He fired a Sot from the right circle, which Greiss’ stick escaped with 5:44 remaining.

The Kraken played without their two top scorers, left winger Jaden Schwartz and right winger Jordan Eberle. Both were expelled for abdominal injuries.

Each team scored two goals in the second period.

The Red Wings prevailed with Fabbri’s power play goal to 4:46. The Kraken leveled the score at 10:44 when Dunn fired a power play shot from a point behind a screened Greiss.

Donato gave Seattle a 2-1 lead with just under four minutes from time after Detroit defender Jordan Oesterle slipped and lost the puck in his own zone.

Less than an hour before the game, the Red Wings announced that striker Tyler Bertuzzi had been added to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. Bertuzzi, the team’s third-best goalscorer with nine goals and nine assists in 20 games, is considered the only unvaccinated player in the NHL.

Bertuzzi has missed three more Red Wings games in Canada this season. Because of his unvaccinated status, he is not allowed to cross the border.
