Rockets rout Everett, 13-3, in five innings | Local

Southern Huntingdon has virtually hit softball cover lately, including a 32-hit barrage in Tuesday’s double-header against Northern Bedford, and head coach Terri Lessley was hoping the streak in the crucial Inter-County Conference South Division competition on Thursday in the undefeated Everett was continued.

The Rockets beat the Warriors for 15 hits that afternoon and second pitcher Ally Leidy hit six and scattered four hits as Southern Huntingdon turned Thursday’s rematch into a 13-3 router in five innings on Thursday.

The win was Southern Huntingdon’s 11th in their last 12 games since losing a 6-2 home draw to Everett on April 13. The missiles improved to 14-3 overall and 11-1 in the Southern Division. The Warriors slipped to 10-1 overall and 8-1 on the circuit.

“The result came as a bit of a surprise to us as we know Everett is a great team,” commented Lessley. “But that was a total team effort today. We didn’t score very well in that first game against Everett. But we’ve scored well lately and were hoping to continue today. When we came down in the second round, and even when Everett came back in the third, I knew we had to start hitting as much as we can and keep our heads out in the game. Ally did a great job and everyone wanted this win. “

Cloe Price lifted a sacrificial fly to left field to surprise Lainie Treece in the second round and give Everett a 1-0 jump. However, Southern converted five hits into five runs in the top third. Carlee Leidy and Lauren Hartman hit RBI base goals while Morgan Hileman Hartman doubled up home to give the Rockets a 5-1 advantage.

A stroll up to Olivia Hillegas and a mistake on a ball hit by Katie Price set the stage for Makenna Richards’ two-part single in the lower third to bring the deficit down to 5-3. But C. Leidy secured a two and three home run in the fourth, scoring Callie Garlock and A. Leidy.

Southern Huntingdon put the game away with the last five runs in the fifth. Hattie Flood sang home Kenadee Doyle, while a Garlock-hit base hit Hannah Hunsinger. After Garlock’s hit, Flood was able to score as well as Garlock due to two mistakes. Majerle North then chose C. Leidy to gain victory over the Rule of Grace.

Southern Huntingdon travels to the Juniata Valley this afternoon.
