Peck’s second-half goal snaps tie, powers Mount Everett boys soccer to season sweep over Hoosac Valley | Local Sports

CHESHIRE – It’s spring break, but the past week hasn’t been a big break for the Mount Everett boys’ soccer team.

Wednesday was the third game in as many days for the Eagles, who left a wet and muddy place at Hoosac Valley High School with a 2-1 win over the Hurricanes.

“With three games in a row we get an idea of how we play, even though it’s difficult,” said senior Alek Zdziarski. “It was hard [early in the season] It took us a few games to get in shape, but we’re learning what works and what doesn’t. ”

The Eagles used two unanswered goals to claim victory. The game was tied 17 minutes from time when Zdziarski found Jordi Peck behind the Hurricane defense to score the game-winning goal in the sophomore year.

Wednesday’s competition followed Mount Everett’s 1-0 win over Hoosac Valley on April 13th.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” said Zdziarski, “but we also knew we could beat them if we stick together. Sometimes we get inside our heads and don’t play like we should.”

Every team hit early, and the Hurricanes started when Jake Richardson delivered a through pass that only Zach Hubbard could reach. Hubbard took the opportunity to send the ball from Everett keeper Michael Devoti out of reach and gave the home team a 1-0 lead.

It only took Mount Everett minutes to respond when Nathaniel VonRuden made a distraction over Hoosac’s Lucas Waterman to level the match.

The first few minutes were an outlier as both defenses had settled in and only one goal was possible for the rest of the game.

“We fell short in their place and thought we had a better chance here on our home field,” said Waterman. “I think our problem is that we are a lot better than we think we have. We have a lot of great soccer players and a lot of hard workers … but in some games the ball just doesn’t go in. I have to give props [Devoti], he is great.”

It was a busy morning for Devoti, who scored five saves in the game, and so was Waterman, who prevented six shots from reaching the net. In addition to goalkeeping duties, Waterman Hoosac’s voice was on the field, directing traffic from the backlines when his team was on the offensive.

“As a goalkeeper, that’s the biggest part,” Waterman said when he was clamoring. “Teammates say where to go because you can see the whole field from behind and they may not see a player behind you.

“In all sports I try to be the loudest and most direct people, to be the leader we need on the field. As soon as we leave the field, everything is a coach [Patrick Mahoney]. ”

The Hoosac Valley had its chances of missing out on a handful of one-timers and an open view of the net. The rainy conditions made the passes a little more unpredictable and the through balls moved much faster, according to Waterman.

At the same time, the hurricane keeper is confident that his team has additional equipment that has not yet been unlocked.

“We had a few players out there but it could be a lack of focus,” he said. “Coach has said before that football is a mental game that you have to be active all the time. It’s not like other sports where you have 10 seconds to turn it off, you have to do it all the time let it run – it’s that simple. ”

Saturday marks the end of the regular season as teams prepare for the Fall II Berkshire County tournament next week. The Hurricanes end the season on Thursday with a home game against the millionaires. In the meantime, the Eagles have time to catch their breath before heading to Lenox on Saturday.

“We’ll take a rest and take care of our bodies,” said Zdziarski. “The game on Saturday will be tough. We have to train hard on Friday and make sure we stick together.”
