NY Jets ‘should pursue’ TE Gerald Everett in free agency

With so many enticing free-agent options in 2022, the NY Jets could pull off a reliably tight end like Seattle Seahawks’ Gerald Everett. A good tight end could be the last piece these Jets’ offensive unit needs to thrive next season.

The Dallas Cowboys’ Dalton Schultz will likely be the best free-agent tight end this offseason, but there’s a good chance Dallas will stick with him. Gerald Everett could be the next best target and the Jets have plenty of room to sign him.

Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger recently listed a free agent every NFL team should pursue this offseason and suggested the Jets should pursue Gerald Everett.

“Everett, a former second-round draft pick for the Los Angeles Rams, would fit into Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur’s system and be a tight-end upgrade without breaking the bank.”

Everett ramped up production in the second half of the 2021 season, finishing with a career-high 478 receiving yards and a 76.2 catch percentage. This is his third straight 400-yard season, and at 27, Everett is just picking up steam.

New York stabbed the tight end position group last year, but now that the team has a steady offense featuring Zach Wilson and Elijah Moore, it might be worth investing in a top-class pass-catching tight end.

The Jets’ tight end unit, as expected, underperformed severely last season. Ryan Griffin and Tyler Kroft tried to provide some safety, but they finished eighth and ninth overall for the team, beating only Denzel Mims, who also had a memorable season.

Everett presents a solid tight end solution and would allow the Jets to use their draft picks in other areas like safety and pass rushers. You could go even further into the position in the draft.

There is little risk in bringing in an experienced pass catcher like Gerlad Everett while the potential rewards for improving tight end position would be game-changing for 2022.
