Mary Elizabeth (Zimmerman) Hornickle – Obituary – Mahoning Valley

October 7, 1930 ~ October 12, 2021 (age 91)

Mary Elizabeth Hornickle, 91, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at the Opis Highlands Lake Center.

Mrs. Hornickle was born on October 7, 1930 in Warren, Ohio, to the late Eugene and Mary Caddick Zimmerman.

Mrs. Hornickle was affectionately known as Mary Beth as a child and Beth as an adult. Beth grew up in Niles and graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1948. An accomplished musician, Beth studied voice and piano at the Dana School of Music and graduated from Youngstown College in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in music.

Beth was an elementary school teacher at Youngstown City Schools for three years, teaching music as well as third and fourth grade students at Washington Elementary School. On January 7, 1956, she married Donald (Don) Hornickle and they made their home in Boardman. As a housewife, Beth took on her role as wife and mother. She was involved in the activities of her children, was a boy scout and continued her love of music for several years as an accompanist for the Youngstown Male Choir.

She was an active member of McGuffy United Methodist Church, Richard Brown United Methodist Church, and Trinity United Methodist Church, where she campaigned for United Methodist Women, taught Sunday school, and performed in church music and choir. Together with her husband Don, they served on four mission trips to the Caribbean, twice to Dominica and once to St. Kitts and Nevis.

Don died on March 16, 2017 after 61 years of marriage. Beth leaves behind her son, John Hornickle, of Vancouver, Washington; Daughter Brenda (Larry Lawrence) Hornickle of Lakeland, Florida; Granddaughter Katrina (Ryan Wolff) Lawrence-Wolff of San Antonio, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hudson Wolff.

A memorial service on Beth’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Cunningham-Becker funeral house in Poland under the direction of Pastor Greg Calko. The family welcomes friends from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the time of the service
