Coloring a Community Vision of Seattle’s Water Future

Seattle Public Utilities has listened to our community’s values and goals for long-term resilience, racial and environmental justice, and personal and community well-being.

It’s all part of Design our water, our ongoing efforts to plan equitable and environmentally sound investments in drainage and wastewater that will help protect Seattle’s natural waters for the next 50 years.

In addition to responding to urgent needs in the years to come – such as more severe climate change-induced storms – future investments in drainage and sewage systems can also create many different community benefits and act as a catalyst for them.

From the very beginning, we’ve worked with our community to ensure that future multi-benefit investments match their values and needs – specifically Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities who have historically participated in urban planning Have been marginalized and often bear the heaviest burdens of underinvestment.

Today we’re excited to share the first glimpse of our community’s vision plan – developed over several years of outreach, engagement, and partnership with our communities – which will guide us from here.

Seattle is a water-based, climate-resilient city. There is ample access to restored lakes, creeks, the Duwamish River, and the Puget Sound. Healthy natural systems connect a network of diverse and vibrant neighborhoods where race and economic status are no longer predictors of outcomes. Seattle is a hub for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship that provides opportunities to build wealth for our communities.
