SPOKANE, Wash. – It’s the first Sunday in May, but the Spokanites know it as “Bloomsday”. The 7.5 mile race is still virtual this year, but that hasn’t stopped people from getting out to celebrate.

Typically, the event draws thousands to downtown Spokane. There weren’t that many people there today, but Dave Jackson and his family still found a way to find out. Dave had his knee replaced in December, but he was still training to participate.

“I’ve put many, many miles into walking and a little jogging, that’s all,” said Dave. “My attitude is that I just want to get ready, you know, be ready and get the shirt in the mail.”

This is his 43rd Bloomsday and this year he brought his son Henry with him, who is just happy to be able to enjoy the sunshine again.

“I like it, especially since last year we’ve all been online and couldn’t really go outside that much, but I’m just excited,” said Henry.

Since the event is virtual, everyone can run the race in their own time. You can still register for the event here and take part until May 9th. The event may be a little different, but it’s still special for Spokane.

“It means pretty much everything [in Spokane]”Said Charlie Jackson.” If we didn’t have a Bloomsday, I don’t know what else we would do. “

“It’s the magic of Spokane,” said Dave. “It is wonderful.”

Because the event is virtual, it won’t block traffic, so attendees have to watch out for cars and open roads.

“You have to be careful because there are cars and there is real traffic, just like there is real traffic now,” said Dave.

This year, participants from all 50 states are running on Bloomsday. Anyone who finishes the race will still receive a finisher t-shirt in the mail.
