Spokane Fire Department (SFD) units were dispatched to a vehicle extrication on I-90 on Lincoln Street in downtown Spokane on Tuesday, May 25th at around 5:15 p.m. When SFD employees were on site, they encountered a multiple vehicle collision with heavily damaged vehicles in the lanes to the east and west of the I90. SFD staff were able to successfully free a trapped patient with the Jaws of Life. Seven other patients were treated by SFD paramedics and EMTs and transported by American Medical Response (AMR). All eight patients were taken to hospitals in the area, one critically, one seriously and six slightly injured. At the time of this writing, the exact cause of the collision is unknown and is being investigated by the Washington State Patrol (WSP). Throughout the incident, I-90 was 100% closed to traffic to the west and to traffic to the east except for one lane. A total of 23 firefighters from four different SFD fire stations and six AMR ambulances responded to the incident.
