Yusei Kikuchi takes no-hit bid into 7th inning in Seattle Mariners’ 1-0 win over Houston Astros

HOUSTON – Yusei Kikuchi went straight in the seventh inning, Taylor Trammell scored and the Seattle Mariners beat the Houston Astros 1-0 on Thursday to avoid a four-game series sweep.

Kikuchi (1-1) did not allow a hit until Carlos Correa doubled with a hit in the seventh to the deep right midfield.

Correa was stranded when Yuli Gurriel landed on Kikuchi and Aledmys Diaz on shortstop.

This was the only hit allowed by Kikuchi, who threw seven innings, hit seven and went two, and threw 61 out of 95 pitches for strikes. Kikuchi walked with Alex Bregman in the first and Myles Straw in the third, and then retired 11 times in a row.

Kikuchi, a 30-year-old left-handed from Japan, started Thursday with a career record of 8-16 with an ERA of 5.42 since joining Seattle in 2019.

Anthony Misiewicz threw a perfect eighth place and Kendall Graveman a ninth hit for his third save and finished a two-hitter.

Trammell hit his fourth home run of the season in the third inning, a ball that seemed to brush the glove of a jumping Chas McCormick on the right wall of the field.

Seattle stopped a streak of four losses. Houston lost for the second time in their last eight games.

Houston starter Luis Garcia (0-3) allowed three hits and hit six in five innings. The Astro’s bullpen kept Seattle scoreless in four innings and allowed only one run in the last 14 innings.
