Wolf stops 37, Silvertips beat Winterhawks 3-2

Wolf stop 37, Silvertips beat Winterhawks 3-2: Dustin Wolf stopped 37 of 39 shots, and Gage Goncalves’ shorthanded goal 39 seconds into the third half gave the Everett Silvertips a head start they never gave up when they hit Portland Winterhawks 3-2 defeated Memorial Coliseum Tuesday night. It’s Everett’s ninth straight win against Portland since last season and her fifth this season.

Why Everett won: An unspectacular but consistent game by Wolf, the best goalkeeper in the WHL. He has now stopped 169 of 179 shots in five games against Portland this season, all wins.

Why Everett won: The forward combo of Cole Fonstad and Gage Goncalves. They were on the ice for Everett’s first goal from Jacob Wright, with Goncalves getting an assist, then Fonstad scored Goncalves for the starting gate to start the third and Goncalves scored Fonstad for an outlier for the goal that turned out to be the winner . Fonstad, a good bet to top the division unless Goncalves catches him, now has 9 points in 5 games against Portland after the Winterhawks kept him pretty well last season.

Why Portland lost: They had only given up one shorthanded goal all season and the Silvertips hadn’t scored, but with the 1-1 win, Goncalves scored the final starting goal in the Portland powerplay. The power play, which struggled for most of the season, scored a goal and went 1 to 5 but left the Winterhawks in the lurch.

Why Portland lost: The top three goalscorers, Simon Knak, Reece Newkirk and Seth Jarvis, all remained goalless. Newkirk and Jarvis were held for a total of 5 shots.

What it means: Everett will play Seattle on Wednesday, but regardless of that result, they have a chance to claim the division title in the rematch against Portland on Friday at the Memorial Coliseum. This requires the league to fix the ranking by percentage points after announcing that Everett’s Covid-postponed game with Tri-City cannot be rescheduled.

No goals.
