KWWL has learned Waterloo Police Chief, Joel Fitzgerald, is a finalist for the job of Police Chief, this time in Vancouver, Washington.

The City of Vancouver has released names of the five finalists, one of whom will replace longtime Chief of Police, James McElvain, who retires on June 30.

Fitzgerald has been Waterloo Police Chief since June of 2020, but has applied for several Police Chief positions during his Waterloo tenure, including open jobs in Miami, Albuquerque, Memphis and Austin, Texas.

Three of the finalists for the Police Chief job in Vancouver are current members of the Vancouver Police Department.

They are Jeffery Mori, Assistant Police Chief, Michael Lester, Assistant Police Chief and Troy Price, Assistant Police Chief.

The other finalist is Andrew Neiman, Captain, Los Angeles Police Department.

Joel Fitzgerald came to Waterloo from Fort Worth, Texas,

Vancouver has a population around 186,000 and is the 4th largest city in the state of Washington.

The Waterloo City Council recently delayed a vote on a new contract for Chief Fitzgerald, which would include a pay raise.

If the City Council approves, Fitzgerald’s annual salary would increase from $141,463 to $165,000 a year.

That would make Fitzgerald the second highest paid Chief of Police in Iowa, while Waterloo is the 9th largest city in the state.
