Vancouver, Washington man killed in climbing accident south of Leavenworth

A 44-year-old Vancouver, Washington, man was killed in a climbing accident on the Icicle Buttress south of Leavenworth, according to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said that on the Fourth of July, the man’s climbing partner flagged down a US Forest Service officer who happened to be in the area.

Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue personnel found the man dead from what appeared to be injuries from an estimated 100-foot fall.

The woman who had been climbing with the man told rescuers that the two were climbing on the Buttress when a heavy rainstorm moved in.

She was lowered to the bottom of the pitch with her climbing partner to follow. As she was coming down the trail, she heard a noise and saw him fall.

The name of the climber has not been released, pending notification of his next of kin.
