Sulfur, LA (KPLC) – Two firefighters received minor injuries while responding to a structure fire at the vacant Quality Suites in Sulfur.
Nathan Hal Thomasini, 27, of Vancouver, Washington, was arrested for simple arson, trespassing, simple burglary and injury by arson. Officials described Thomasini as a transient.
Witness statements and surveillance footage confirmed Thomasini was in the immediate area of the hotel when the fire started, according to the State Fire Marshal. Sulfur Police deputies also confirmed Thomasini was the sole occupant of the building.
Four dogs were used to search the Quality Suites hotel, which sat vacant since Hurricane Laura in 2020. Authorities did not believe anyone died in the fire but wanted to rule out the possibility.
The fire broke out around 3 am in Sulfur, engulfing the majority of the building.
“This is one of the bigger fires we’ve had in the area,” OHSEP Director Dick Gremillion said.
The size of the fire was enough to bring out the local arm of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, which is providing logistical support. The office’s command center is set up at the site.
