Tsumani Sirens Installed At Port Of Everett

In case you’re wondering what the circular object that was just installed in Everett Harbor for the 10th Street Boat Launch, here’s your explanation.

A similar siren was installed at the south terminal.

On Friday, the first of two tsunami warning sirens planned for the Everett waterfront was installed at the Jetty Landing & Boat Launch, with the second siren slated to be installed in Everett Seaport Harbor.

Everett’s new sirens are part of Washington Emergency Management DepartmentThe Nationwide Tsunami Siren Network, which includes 122 All-Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) tsunami sirens along Washington’s inner and outer coasts, providing an outdoor alert method for people and communities on or near the water.

In the event of a tsunami warning, the sirens will play a howling sound followed by a voice message in English and Spanish instructing listeners to evacuate immediately to a hill.

The sirens have an audible range of approximately one mile. The system is also equipped with a blue light for the hearing impaired.

Once Everett’s new sirens are operational, routine monthly tests are required. The test takes place every first Monday of the month at 12:00 noon.

The monthly tests will have a Westminster gong, unlike the full siren warning protocol. The sirens are tested every year on the third Thursday in October in connection with the nationwide preparatory event “Great Washington ShakeOut” with a full howl.
