Timely team tight end training camp tales

If the LA Rams were ready to let veteran tight end Gerald Everett sell his wares to the highest bidder through the 2021 NFL Free Agency Market, the team certainly had a plan for the 2021 season to get that second tight end role in this one Year to cover, right? I mean, Everett was on track with the Rams for the primary tight-end role, and the same old “We’re going to involve him (Everett) more” rhetoric splashed the headlines every year, and the same old Meh every year -Production.

Does that mean the LA Rams will finally end splitting their primary tight-end role this year and finally focus on veteran Tyler Higbee? To be honest, I really don’t see how the team can do differently. An ideal size at 6 feet 6 and 255 pounds, Higbee has proven that it can deliver the goods when the offense is looking in its direction.

In the past, getting Jared Goff to look his way has been problematic. If you remove that “anomaly” from 2019, he has an average of 42 goals per year. He more than doubled that number in 2019, the year teammate Gerald Everett struggled to stay on the field and the LA Rams struggled to play the ball. Somehow, the team stumbled upon a two-tight-end package that Higbee brought to the field with teammate Johnny Mundt. While Mundt did the blocking duties, Higbee destroyed the defenses in one month for over 500 years.

So many analysts are now calling December 2019 fool’s gold, but I disagree. In fact, I think recent events speak even more of a career high season for Tyler Higbee. Higbee is clearly the start tight end. He’s now on the receiving end of passes from Matthew Stafford, a seasoned NFL quarterback who tends to target his tight ends, and Higbee is the biggest target on the field. Higbee could realistically be targeted more than 100 times this season. With a 75 percent graduation rate averaging over the past two years and an average of yards per reception that could exceed 12 yards this season, Higbee could best hit 900 yards this year.

Too fat? When you combine the accomplishments of Everett and Higbee in 2020, you get 938 yards. Higbee Soloing could and should do better this year.
