The Dirt: Spokane Valley Fire Department Builds New Vehicle Maintenance Workshop; Speak-easy is coming to downtown Spokane

The Spokane Valley Fire Department is moving ahead with plans to build a new vehicle maintenance facility in the city’s northeast industrial area.

The department filed a pre-development application with the city to build the 14,400 square foot facility on 8 acres of undeveloped land at 18705 E. Garland Ave.

Site plans show that the site can accommodate a future fire station, storage building and a training facility with a road.

The maintenance building would include areas for vehicle storage, repair, offices, and tools and parts, depending on the application.

According to a 2019 letter to the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services’ project review committee, the department said the project will include five expanded drive-through bays to accommodate longer drawbar trucks.

Bernardo | Wills Architects from Spokane designed the facility. TW Clark Construction from Spokane Valley is the project contractor.

Project costs are estimated at $ 4.2 million, according to the application.

The new facility would replace the division’s current maintenance facility, which was built in 1993 at 2411 N. Pioneer Lane. The department said it outgrew its existing facility, leading to plans to build a larger maintenance building to meet vehicle service needs for the next 20 to 25 years.

The project is funded by a voter-approved maintenance and operating fee of $ 113 million in 2019. The levy will also fund firefighters’ salaries, operating costs, maintenance, equipment and other capital projects, including a new fire station and renovation of an existing station.

Restaurant, bar set for downtown

A new Speak Easy style bar and restaurant is coming to downtown Spokane.

Wall Project LLC, of which Jordan and Joel Tampien are chief executives, applied for permission to convert the basement and first floors of a building at 120 N. Wall Street into a 3,470 square foot restaurant and bar.

The Tampien brothers own 4 Degrees Real Estate.

The project was commissioned by TW Clark Construction from Spokane Valley. Trek Architecture from Spokane designed the project. The renovation costs are estimated at $ 100,000 according to the application.

The Tampiens received planning permission in March 2020 to extensively renovate the 24,500-square-foot mixed-use building on Wall Street, including adding 21 rental units to the upper floors.

The Tampiens sold the building in May for $ 7 million to 5D Holdings LLC, of which Scott Isaak is chief executive officer, according to the records of the Spokane County Assessor Office.

Isaak is the owner of the Sweeto Burrito restaurant chain.

South Hill location considered for housing

Lower South Hill could soon house a new apartment building, according to a pre-development application filed with the city last week.

Owner 5th and Washington Apartments LLC plans to build a 67-unit, five-story apartment complex near the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and Washington Street.

The site plans show that the building’s ground floor is intended for parking, while the upper floors contain a mix of studio, 1 and 2 bedroom units.

The project costs have not yet been determined. According to the site plan, construction should start in spring 2022.

Park department plans dog park

The City of Spokane Parks and Recreation Department has submitted a pre-development application for the construction of Falls Dog Park north of the Spokane River.

Work includes landscaping and adding benches, lighting, fences, and a gazebo at a location at 730 N. Post St.

The project costs, according to the application, amount to US $ 250,000.

The construction of the dog park is to begin in spring 2022.

The city is building the dog park with The Falls LLC, a company led by Spokane developer Lawrence Stone of LB Stone Properties and Scafco Corp.

Stone is developing The Falls, a mixed-use project consisting of three buildings at 829 W. Broadway Ave. will exist, adjacent to the planned dog park.

In July, an application for planning permission was submitted to the city to prepare the site for the construction of the first tower of the The Falls project. The city is currently examining the permit.
