The 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday looked very different this year because they weren’t televised, streamed, had a red carpet or an audience.

The reason? In February last year, a Los Angeles Times exposé revealed that the HFPA had not admitted a black member in 20 years. After the controversy – and the downfall of one of its heads over non-racial email – Hollywood eschewed the organization. HFPA’s longtime broadcast partner NBC later said it wouldn’t air the show, and it was reported that the organization was struggling to book prominent presenters.

Despite all this, the HFPA moved ahead with the Golden Globe Awards in 2022 and hosted a “private event” at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with the winners being announced via Twitter and press releases.
