The Center Foundation receives a $ 134,000 grant to expand the sports medicine program to Caldera HS

BEND, Oregon (KTVZ) – The Center Foundation has received a grant from the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust of Vancouver, Washington, to help expand its sports medicine program in Deschutes County to include Caldera High School, which will later be in southeast Bend opens year.

The Center Foundation currently offers sports medicine services to four schools in the Bend-La Pine School District (in addition to high schools in Sisters, La Pine, Madras, and Prineville) and will add Caldera High School to their roster in the 2021-2022 school year.

“The Center Foundation has been committed to the safety and health of student athletes in central Oregon for 20 years, and we are the only organization in Deschutes County capable of providing these sports medical services to students,” said Sonja Donohue, executive Director for the Center Foundation. “Such funding is invaluable to our program and we are so grateful for the support from the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust.”

The $ 134,553 grant will help expand the Center Foundation’s sports medicine program to Caldera High School and help host a certified athletic trainer at no cost to students or their families. Athletic Trainers provide medical services including sports injury management, injury prevention, and concussion assessment and management. The active and sporting participation of young people is important for their entire physical, mental, behavioral, social and educational development.

The Center Foundation is the only nonprofit in the region dedicated to providing sports medical services to student athletes. The foundation’s athletic coaches coach more than 5,000 students at over 1,400 sporting events each year in Oregon’s Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. To date, the Center Foundation has performed over 17,000 basic concussion tests and examined and treated over 2,200 concussions for high school athletes in Central Oregon. The Foundation, its board of directors, and staff look forward to continuing to provide sports medical services to all student athletes as Central Oregon’s population continues to grow.

The Center Foundation has launched the Campaign for Caldera fundraising campaign to further support its expansion into Caldera High School. To learn more, visit: https://www.centerfoundation.org/campaign-for-caldera/.
