Take the 1½-pound burger challenge — if you have the guts

EVERETT – Scuttlebutt Brewing Co. is offering a burger challenge in honor of its 25th anniversary.

If you can eat the new Triple Threat Burger in 25 minutes – that’s one minute for every year Scuttlebutt has been on – get it for free and get your picture on the wall. Otherwise, you will have to pay $ 30 for it.

The 1½ pound burger consists of two ⅓ pound beef patties, 5 ounces pulled pork, three ghost pepper wings, three onion rings, ghost pepper habanero jack cheese, lettuce, red onion, tomato, cucumber, habanero -Barbecue sauce and chipotle mayonnaise, all on a 5-inch potato bun, with 2 pounds of freshly cut Cajun fries on the side.

Scuttlebutt’s Burger Challenge is just one of many specials on menus across town for Everett Restaurant Month.

“We wanted to find a way to really support the restaurants in town,” said Julio Cortes, city spokesman for Everett. “Last year the catering industry went through some very difficult times. We actually hope this will be an annual tradition. “

So far, 20 restaurants have signed up for Everett Restaurant Month. This year’s offering includes Prix Fixe (three-course menu for $ 30), deals and steals (priced at $ 1, $ 5, and $ 10), and “Unicorns” (unique and rare specials).

“My favorite part of this whole thing is the unicorn menu items, which are only available during restaurant month,” said Cortes. This allows the restaurant to be creative and fun. “

Other restaurants with Everett Restaurant Month Specials include: Anthony’s Homeport, Anthony’s Woodfire Grill, Bluewater Distilling Co., Brooklyn Bros. Pizzeria, Buck’s American Cafe, Cafe Zippy, Cakewalk Shop, Capers + Olives, Chianti, Emory’s on Silver Lake, James Bay Distillers, Jette Bar & Grill, Katana, Lombardi, Narrative Coffee, New Mexicans, Terracotta Red, That Chicken Place and Venture Kitchen.

Here’s a foretaste: That Chicken Place has spiced tots for $ 1. This week’s Prix-Fixe at Capers + Olives consists of Chioggia beets, Pacific stone fish or bucatini and olive oil cake. Brooklyn Bros. ‘Unicorn is a strawberry cannoli for $ 4.99. Narrative Coffee offers a buttermilk biscuit breakfast sandwich and espresso with milk for $ 10. The Prix-Fixe in Buck’s American Cafe is a salad made from green, spinach or Caesar, chicken parmesan, wild salmon or sirloin, as well as chocolate volcano cake or fruit cake with ice cream. James Bay Distillers Unicorn is a $ 10 Ginger Rogers Cocktail.

Scuttlebutt’s Triple Threat Burger was Jeremiah Marleau’s idea. The Scuttlebutt chef designed the anniversary burger – he tripled the meat and tripled the heat – before the city launched Everett Restaurant Month. He said it was the perfect time to put it on Scuttlebutt’s menu.

Nobody has won the challenge yet. Although Eric Nord, Scuttlebutt’s master brewer, was close. Nord tested the Burger Challenge for Scuttlebutt before it kicked off on March 1st.

“He has a goddamn appetite and he loves spices,” said Marleau. “I thought if someone could, they could. He was close, but he couldn’t do it. He died after 21 minutes and could no longer eat. ”

Another burger challenge rule? No ranch dressing allowed. You’ll have to sweat out this heat.

Everett’s Cortes has been to That Chicken Place, Capers + Olives, and Narrative Coffee for their Everett Restaurant Month specials. He has not yet decided whether he will accept Scuttlebutt’s Burger Challenge. He wants to show the restaurant’s support, of course, but a 1½ pound cheeseburger and 2 pounds of fries scare him.

“I’m still debating this,” he said. “I don’t know if I could actually do it, but I’m still thinking about it. It is a big. It’s the size that scares me. I’m glad I have the rest of the month to think about it.

“You have to do something that scares you every now and then, so I’m sure I’m still thinking about it.”
