State To Pay Light Rail Attacker $250 Per Day

The State of Washington will pay Seattle light rail station attack suspect $250 each day he is not in treatment. The attacker is Alexander Jay. He was ordered to undergo inpatient treatment for 90 days. The man who threw a woman down a flight of stairs was found incompetent to stand trial. The problem was caused by the state that could not find the man treatment.

The attack seemed to be random. Seattle light rail stations have seen an increase in violence over the recent years. A judge required treatment in order for the attacker to stand trial. The judge said it was important to do this in a civil society. The man will be paid $250 a day while the state remains unable to find him mental health help.

Alexander can be seen on a video grabbing a woman. He then throws her down the stairs two times. This happened at the King Street light rail station back in March. The man is also accused of stabbing another woman 10 times at a bus stop on the same day.

The man was identified and caught. Alexander went to court in April. He was found incompetent to stand trial and ordered to undergo 90 days of inpatient treatment. Over 100 days later, and there is no treatment. His defense called for his release.

The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) was held in contempt of court for failing to admit Jay to treatment. The judge said holding Jay in jail instead of providing him treatment is a violation of his constitutional rights.

Jay does not get the money and get out of jail to go shopping. He will remain held in jail by the judge due to the severity of the charges. The woman he attacked at the light rail station addressed the court and asked for the state to keep Jay jailed.
