Spokane roads could be slippery again at the weekend if there is snow

Thursday’s snow left drivers in a mess on the streets. This weekend could be another headache as another round of winter weather is expected.

SPOKANE, Washington – Travel could be difficult this weekend as the weather forecast may have rain and snow.

According to weather models, snow should reach the northern Cascade Mountains late Friday evening and very early into the lowlands on Saturday. The snow is expected to overflow in Spokane and northern Idaho not long after that.

According to the National Weather Service, about one to five inches of snow is expected for Spokane and about five to three inches of snow for Coeur d’Alene from Friday evening to early Sunday morning.

NWS also forecasts northern Idaho and the northern Cascades to conserve most of the snow accumulation. Both Winthrop and Bonner’s Ferry could see approximately four to six inches, while Sandpoint could see between six and eight inches.

On Saturday night, some of the snow could turn into rain, especially south of Davenport to the Tri-Cities and Pullman.

Light freezing rain is also possible for the Columbia Basin on late Saturday morning, according to the NWS.

NWS says the predicted winter weather could mean a difficult time traversing the passes, along with poor visibility and compact snow and ice on the roads.

This comes after slippery roads gave drivers a headache during Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Road crews are slowly starting to gain the upper hand on icy roads in the Spokane area on Friday afternoon, although some back roads are still icy.

The Spokane Police (SPD) issued an emergency alert on Thursday at 7.15 p.m. and urged residents to limit their driving if possible due to extremely icy road conditions. The SPD responded to more than 100 accidents on Thursday. In a Facebook post, they reminded drivers to leave early, slow down, and be patient while driving.
