Spokane residents were asked to weigh in on site for a new water tank

June 21, 2021

The city of Spokane plans to build a new 2 million gallon water tank to ensure the availability of adequate water during a fire and to meet the water needs for much of the city’s South Hill, particularly during the summer season.

The public is invited to consider where the new water tank should be built via an online survey. The investigation will run until July 2nd. The potential locations for this facility have been limited to three including 31st & Napa, 37th Avenue Reservoir Site, and Hamblen Elementary School.

“This project will help improve the water supply for a large part of our community,” says Marlene Feist, director of public works for the city. “We have water reservoirs throughout the community to meet critical water supply needs and we ask our citizens to help us with the final site selection for this facility.”

The city’s water system has 23 pressure zones to ensure the water reaches every customer. This tank would be in the so-called “high pressure zone”. The system’s high pressure zone supplies all homes on South Hill south of about 14th Avenue. The tank site must be approximately two acres, near existing water pipes and near the center of the pressure zone.

The city supplies more than 200,000 people with clean drinking water every day. The city operates the state’s second largest water system with more than 1,000 miles of aqueduct. The system is critical to maintaining public health, fire safety and the provision of needed water throughout our community. Infrastructure such as water tanks are needed across the city to ensure proper pressure and water availability are maintained for all customers.
