SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Schools has plans to install new security cameras to help address safety concerns in the parking area underneath I-90.

According to the school district’s minutes for the board meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the consent agenda section, there’s an item that addresses the security system installation.

SPS has awarded a contract to Camtek, Inc. in the amount of just over $322,000 for it.

Lewis & Clark high school has seen its share of incidents: car break-ins near the school in 2021 and, most recently, the fake active shooter hoax in December 2022.

We know now that wasn’t a real threat, but in the case of real danger to students and staff, Spokane Public Schools these cameras installed.

The school district says the wireless cameras would be installed on ground secured poles, not off the existing freeway bridge structure, and it will be in compliance with federal DOT requirements and restrictions.

Video surveillance and storage would be based at the Spokane Public Schools administration building.

SPS will be discussing the implementation of the security system at Wednesday night’s school board meeting at 6 pm

It is open to attend and there is a Zoom link to watch virtually.
