SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department and the American Red Cross are teaming up to help keep you safe.

On May 7, volunteers and firefighters will install free smoke alarms for local families. It’s part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign to bring down the number of people killed and hurt in fires across the country.

“Every second counts when there’s a home fire because you may have as little as two minutes to escape before it’s too late,” Ryan Rodin, American Red Cross Executive Director of the Greater Inland Northwest Chapter said. “That’s why Red Cross volunteers will be out with Spokane Fire to help families take critical steps to protect themselves against these everyday disasters.”

During the 20-minute home visits, Red Cross volunteers and members of the Spokane Fire Department will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan. You can sign up for an appointment here.

“Since 2014, we’ve partnered with the Red Cross to make our community more resilient to a residential fire,” stated Spokane Fire Department Chief Brian Schaeffer. “Spokane Fire appreciates the Red Cross staff and volunteers who dedicate their time and knowledge toward this lifesaving program.”
