SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Chiefs named their new head coach and assistant coach on Monday.

Former interim head coach Ryan Smith has been promoted as the team’s new official head coach. Smith served as the Chiefs’ assistant coach for two seasons before former coach Adam Maglio was fired in February, where Smith then took his spot.

“We are excited for Ryan, who has earned this opportunity,” Chiefs General Manager Matt Bardsley said. “I consider him to be a modern-day coach who is a strong communicator, well-liked and respected by his peers and players, and has a strong focus on player development while preparing his team to compete and achieve overall success.”

And alumnus Dustin Donaghy was also named the team’s new assistant coach. Donaghy moved into a full-time assistant role in February when Smith became the interim head coach, and will now keep his position as assistant coach.

“We are happy as well for Dustin, who will continue as an Assistant Coach in a full-time position,” said Bardsley. “He is a young, driven and eager coach who I believe has a bright future in this game. Dustin is a proud alumnus and has worked hard to earn this opportunity.”

Donaghy played for the Chiefs from 2007 to 2009, including winning a WHL Championship and Memorial Cup with the 2007-08 squad.
