Spokane Chiefs lose in overtime for the second straight night

The Spokane Chiefs had a lot to do against them on Sunday night.

They were in the second leg of the back-to-back games and sent a shorthanded line-up onto the ice of the Spokane Arena.

They played one of their best games of the young season offensively, but still came up short and lost in extra time to the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4.

Seattle’s Conner Roulette scored 13 seconds from the end of the extra frame to keep Spokane off in seven starts without a win.

“The boys fought hard and it was a tough game. We played last night (in Tri-City) and I thought we were fighting with shorthanded, ”said head coach Adam Maglio. “Boys played minutes they hadn’t seen in a while.”

The Chiefs, who came into play with a power play unit among the worst in the league, scored three goals with a five-man advantage.

Maglio owed its success for getting guys online – which he mentioned last week as an area that needs improvement.

Spokane’s first power play goal opened the game when Reed Jacobson took a feed from Eli Zummack in front of the net at 13:59. It was Jacobson’s second goal of the season.

Blake Swetlikoff scored Spokane’s second power play goal at 5:15 am when he rebounded home after a shot from Matt Leduc.

Adam Beckman scored the Chiefs’ third power play goal at 10:40 am of the third from the top of the circle with teammates ahead of Milic.

Keltie Jeri-Leon scored in the first half for Seattle. Jeri-Leon has scored five goals this season – all against Spokane.

Payton Mount made it 2-1 Seattle at 2:42 a second. The lead was short-lived, however, as Swetlikoff’s power play marker came nearly three minutes later.

Erik Atchison tipped a shot from Bobby Russell at 3:28 pm and gave Spokane a 3-2 lead. The Chiefs killed 1:25 of a 5v3 power game in Seattle at the end of the second to maintain the lead. But Tyrel Bauer scored the third goal in just 13 seconds and knotted the game 3-0.

Seattle squeezed into third place, leaving Spokane stuck on their own end for an extended period of time, and Jared Davidson took advantage when Seattle regained the lead at 8:57 a.m. of third. Beckman’s power play goal helped keep the game working overtime. The Chiefs had a man advantage in overtime, but couldn’t connect.

Maglio said new boss Mitchell Kohner, on loan from Prince George Cougars, has been released from quarantine and will skate for the first time during Tuesday’s training. The availability of Kohner for Wednesday’s home competition against the Tri-City Americans has yet to be determined.
