Speed humps coming to Alki Ave SW this weekend

Expect to see construction equipment (and then to watch your speed) as SDOT installs two speed humps on Alki Ave SW as part of their Vision Zero program.

Information from Seattle Department of Transportation

Alki Beach is a popular destination for people to take in scenic views, shop, dine, and play. To help create a safer experience for all users, we are installing two speed humps and in-lane pedestrian crosswalk signs on the west end of Alki Ave SW. This is a location where many people cross the street to access the beach and nearby businesses. On the weekend of September 10 – 11, we’ll build the two speed humps and install in-lane crosswalk signs on Alki Ave SW.

Work hours are weekdays from approximately 9 AM to 4 PM and weekends from approximately 9 AM to 5 PM.

If you are traveling in the area, please expect delays, drive safely in work zones, and follow directions from signs and flaggers.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Speed humps: We’re building two speed humps on Alki Ave SW.
The locations are between 63rd Ave SW and 62nd Ave SW and another one between 58th Ave SW and 57th Ave SW.

Crosswalk signs: Between 62nd Ave SW and 57th Ave SW on Alki Ave SW, we’re installing some in-lane crosswalk warning signs that say “State Law Stop for Pedestrians within Crosswalk.” See graphic on the left.

These speed humps and signs are being built through the City of Seattle’s Vision Zero program in coordination with the Seattle Police Department and Seattle Fire Department.

You can expect construction equipment, materials, and noise as we build the speed humps and install signs. It will take a couple of hours to build each speed hump and let them dry/cool down before people can drive on them. Temporary markings will be put on the speed humps. They will be replaced with permanent markings after one month once the speed humps fully “cure” (harden).

For people driving, we’ll put up temporary “no parking” signs at least 72 hours in advance of construction. We may need to occasionally close the travel lanes and people driving will be directed to drive around the crosswalk signs and speed humps while they are being built. Driveway access will be maintained.

We do not expect impacts to people walking, biking, or using electric scooters and detours will be in place, if needed.
