The suspect, Martay Ellis, 24, was arrested shortly after the attack.

On Tuesday afternoon, officials responded to reports of a woman assaulted on W 2nd Ave and S Jefferson Streets. When they arrived, they saw that the woman was severely beaten and passed out on the floor.

Medical staff provided assistance until the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment for her injuries.

The officers spoke to several witnesses and were given security materials to better understand the incident. The Spokane Police Department’s Technical Assistance Response Unit, officers specially trained in the processing and recovery of digital evidence, responded and assisted in obtaining the required data.

Video footage showed “a particularly despicable one” in which the suspect violently kicked and stamped the woman’s head, even though she was lying motionless on the floor. The SPD immediately began looking for the suspect.

Later that afternoon, the SPD found Ellis and took him into custody without incident. He was sent to Spokane County Jail and charged with First Degree Assault, a Class A crime.

Ellis is a 5-time convicted felon with a criminal record that includes assault and robbery. The victim of the attack lies in the hospital in critical condition.

The SPD went into a press release on the violent nature of the crime: “This incident was particularly shocking because of the brutality and occurred in broad daylight in the city center. Violence of this kind has no place in our church. The SPD will spend the necessary time and resources. ”Arrest violent criminals. The SPD is grateful to witnesses who both provided valuable information and tried to pursue the suspect while he was on the run. The security of our community depends on a committed and caring citizenry. ”
