Shirley Dahlin Obituary (1930 – 2022) – Mt Angel, OR

Shirley M Dahlin
Shirley McClain Dahlin passed away April 24, 2022 in Vancouver, Washington. She was born May 6, 1930 in Albany, Oregon to Raymond Boyd McClain and Grace Mae (Hymes) McClain. Shirley and her family shortly thereafter moved to Newport, Washington where Raymond had new employment with the local Public Utilities Department.
Shirley attended Newport High School, where she met Lloyd Edward Dahlin, and graduated in 1948. The high school sweethearts married December 29, 1950. Lloyd later served in the United State Air Force during the Korean War, and was stationed at various bases around the country. During this time, Shirley resided in different regions of the United States (Maine, Texas, Florida), before settling in the Willamette Valley after Lloyd separated from service in 1955. Shirley and Lloyd came to Silverton in 1956, and later purchased their longtime home on Center Street in 1962. Shirley and Lloyd were faithful members of First Baptist Church in Silverton from that time, and had many close ties to members of the Silverton First Baptist community.
Lloyd taught high school, and Shirley was at home raising children David (born 1958 and Ann (born 1960). Timothy was born in 1967, and a few years later Shirley began her higher education studies, obtaining her Bachelors Degree in Education from Mt. Angel College in 1973, then her Master of Science in Education from Oregon College of Education in 1981. After which she began her career as a reading specialist for Salem-Keizer Public Schools.
Lloyd eventually was forced to retire from teaching due to a chronic illness, and Shirley continued teaching while caring for Lloyd in their home. Shirley retired in 1994 to better care for her husband until Lloyd passed away in 1995.
After Lloyd’s passing, Shirley enjoyed her love of travel, spending time in the Middle East, the Mediterranean region, and United Kingdom. (She especially enjoyed Wales). She also made many trips with children and grandchildren, visiting Hawai’i, Alaska, Florida, and many other destinations. Shirley also enjoyed trips to more local destinations, and was a regular visitor to the Oregon Coast, Central Oregon and Ashland, Oregon for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Shirley and Lloyd shared a deep, authentic love for each other, for God, for neighbors, and for their Silverton First Baptist family. Shirley was a devoted member of the First Baptist, and enjoyed her involvement in many church groups and activities. Shirley was always simply delighted to host a meal or have a visit with these people she loved so much.
Shirley is survived by her son David Dahlin and daughter-in-law Heidi of Oregon City; daughter Ann Tigue of San Diego; son Timothy and daughter-in-law Martha of Vancouver, Washington; grandson Jeffery of Oregon City; granddaughter Erica of Wilsonville,; grandson Matthew of Vancouver, Washington; granddaughter Cailin of Portland, Oregon; and 5 great-grandchildren: Jenna, Aeva, James, Annie, James, Corbin, Esme, and Ziva.
