Road renovations improve travel and safety for all users

VANCOUVER – Downtown Vancouver weekend travelers must bypass the complete closure of East Mill Plain Boulevard (State Route 501) between Washington Street and Main Street from the evening of July 9th through the weekend.

During the closure, construction workers working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will be reconstructing the intersections of East Mill Plain Boulevard on Washington Street and Main Street to improve freight mobility along the corridor.

Currently, trucks moving oversized cargoes from the Port of Vancouver towards I-5 often use the city streets to navigate sections of East Mill Plain Boulevard due to low traffic lights and high points in the carriageway that often make cargoes too long lead, bottoming out.

“By removing the existing asphalt with dangerous high points, we are rebuilding these intersections so that all freight traffic can again use the federal highway instead of the local roads,” said area engineer Susan Fell. “With the growth and development of downtown Vancouver, these improvements are helping anyone who drive, walk, or roll around the area.”

  • Starting Friday, July 9th at 10:00 p.m., crews will close East Mill Plain Boulevard between the intersections of Washington Street and Main Street.
  • The carriageway will be cleared again by 4 a.m. on July 12th at the latest.
  • Travelers should follow the diversion signs for alternative routes.

This work is part of the larger project SR 501 – I-5 to Vancouver Harbor – Junction and Profile Improvements taking place in downtown Vancouver this summer. Paving work along the corridor is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 26th.
