A man from Ridgefield died of injuries sustained in a collision with three vehicles on Interstate 5 on Dec. 18, according to Washington State Patrol.

In a December 27 incident memo, WSP reported that Jorge Santiago-Joaquin, 21, had died at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. He and Ying Ting, 36, from Portland, died as a result of the accident on December 18, when a vehicle driven by Derek Cunningham, 33, from Vancouver, came to the south exit of I-5 at 78th Street Ting’s disabled vehicle bumped into it.

According to the memo, Santiago-Joaquin, the passenger in the vehicle driven by Kiki Salazar, 20, from Milwaukie, stopped on the hard shoulder to help Ting, whose vehicle was stopped at the exit blocking the road.

Cunningham took the exit and rammed Ting’s vehicle, which was then pushed into Salazar’s car. Ting, Salazar and Santiago-Joaquin were between the vehicles at the time and, according to the memo, were rammed into Salazar’s vehicle.

Ting died at the scene of the accident, while Cunningham, Salazar and Santiago-Jaoquin were all taken to PeaceHealth, where Santiago-Joauquin later died. According to the memo, drugs and alcohol are believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, and Cunningham is on trial in the Clark County Superior Court.
