Police shoot Everett man wielding sword after standoff, DA says

Everett police shot and killed a 45-year-old town man allegedly walking towards them with a sword, violently ending a stalemate that unfolded shortly after midnight when the suspect initially barricaded himself at his home, they said Officer.

Police responded to a residential building on Buckman Street shortly after midnight and found a man who lived there barricaded, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office said in a statement.

A SWAT team was also called to the crime scene.

The stalemate escalated after the man left the apartment with a sword and approached police, the statement said.

“The officers used less than lethal force in the form of a sponge cartridge, which was ineffective,” the statement said. “An Everett police officer then shot the suspect. First aid was provided on site and the man was taken to a Boston hospital, where he is expected to survive. An Everett officer was also transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution. This is an open and ongoing investigation. “

Sponge cartridges are less than deadly rounds of ammunition intended to temporarily incapacitate someone.

The authorities did not immediately identify the suspect by name or reveal what charges will be brought against him.
