Penalty-plagued Chiefs drop second straight to Everett | Spokane Chiefs

It is never easy to take offense against the Everett Silvertips. Five penalties make it even more difficult.

There the Spokane Chiefs found themselves in the Western Hockey League on Friday evening when they suffered their second loss to Everett, this time 1: 6. Spokane gave up two power play goals in the defeat and were outbid with 39:22.

Zach Ashton scored his first two goals of the season in a win for Everett. Austin Roest, Ryan Hofer and Cole Fonstad each had a target and assisted for the Silvertips. Only one goal by Cordel Larson with 1:58 in the game prevented Spokane from being suspended for the second night in a row.

Spokane goalkeeper Mason Beaupit was pulled after giving up Everett’s fifth goal in the third half. 16-year-old Manny Panghli was relieved to see his first appearance of the season. Panghli gave up a goal with five shots.

“You have to be disciplined against this team,” said head coach Adam Maglio. “Too many penalties and (Everett) got a few on the PP. Again, it’s a fine line to win against them. They have really good depth throughout the lineup. “

Maglio summed up his point on Everett’s depth by noting that the third and fourth lines of Everett’s Silvertips had four equally powerful goals.

Spokane kept pace with Everett for the first few minutes of the game and even had a 3:20 power play in the game, but couldn’t cause offense with the man advantage. Spokane scored their own penalty and Fonstad took advantage to give the Silvertips a 1-0 lead in the first break.

For the second straight night, a miserable second period for the Chiefs put them well behind eight.

Ashton scored his first goal with a shot from the point that came through traffic at 10:33 before Beaupit. Hofer’s goal came almost three minutes later when he brought home a 2-on-1 pass.

Hunter Campbell got his eighth goal of the season at 6:12 p.m. when he ricocheted home from a shot by Gage Goncalves.

Everett took a 4-0 lead in the second break and didn’t let up in the third.

Roest got his rebound and made it 5-0 5:20 in the final frame. That goal sent Beaupit to the bench and Panghli to the fold.

Everett played the rest of the game more safely, but Ashton got his second part of the game at 4:50 pm.

Everett’s relentless pre-exam disrupted Spokane’s puck bearer all night, and the Chiefs barely found a chance.

“(Everett is) fast. They quickly get into pucks and make sales, ”said Maglio. “They’re a pretty simple ice hockey team. They play well in these difficult areas and come on the net and get traffic there to make it difficult for goalkeepers. “

After scoring a combined 11-1 in the last two games, the Chiefs are waiting until Wednesday for their next game, a date with rivals Tri-City Americans. The teams were supposed to meet on Sunday, but Americans are still on a COVID hiatus.

The gap between games could help Spokane keep going.

“I think time will heal us a bit,” said Maglio.
