OLLU student athlete breaks records

SAN ANTONIO – A cross-country (XC) and track and field athlete from Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) has set three school records.

The junior biology major Nadia Sifuentes currently has the school record in the 4K with a time of 15:12, the 5K with a time of 18:30 and the 6K with a time of 22:35.

“My junior XC season was full of PR and, above all, happy and healthy memories,” said Sifuentes. “Seeing success as an individual and as a team has rekindled my love for sport, and I couldn’t have done it on my own.”

Originally from Brownsville, Texas, Sifuentes joined the OLLU team in Fall 2019. She mentioned that at first running was something she just did and wasn’t passionate about.

“I saw her talent from her first training session and knew that any record of 800 would drop if she wanted to pursue it,” said Patrick Torres, head coach of the cross-country team. “Her cross country season has been phenomenal and I know she has the talent to be an All-American runner in cross country and on the track if we can continue to combine good training with good habits.”

Last year during COVID-19, Sifuentes struggled not only academically but also in her personal life. When coach Torres arrived as the new coach this year, he was aware of Sifuentes’ situation and problems but had the opportunity to see her become a leader, get her grades back in order and do well.

“I’ve become very proud of Nadia this season; She has improved tremendously and is only determined to do better, ”said Viridiana Zuniga, a sophomore kinesiology student. “Last year wasn’t the best year for everyone, but it has definitely redeemed itself and I know that it can break many more records.”

The team was affected by COVID-19 as it did not have a coach for the fall 2020 season. Trainer Patrick joined OLLU in November 2020 as interim head coach for cross-country skiing and athletics.

The women’s and men’s cross-country teams recently won their seventh conference championships, with Sifuentes taking first place in the 5K with a time of 6:50 p.m. You will compete in the 66th Annual NAIA Cross-Country National Championship on November 19 in Vancouver, Washington.
