NIC BASKETBALL: Cardinal men, women notch rivalry wins over Spokane

SPOKANE — On any given night, it could be anyone in North Idaho College’s rotation that could give a team fits.

On Saturday, it was sophomore Julius Mims and transfer Kyle Karstetter.

Mims had 29 points and 17 rebounds and Karstetter — a transfer from Idaho State — had 17 points off the bench for the Cardinals in a 100-83 win over the Community Colleges of Spokane in Northwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.

NIC, the top-ranked team in the NWAC, finished 10 of 29 from the 3-point line, compared to 13 of 28 for Spokane.

“We didn’t shoot it great from the 3-point line,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “But we’ve got so many weapons. We’ve just got to figure out whose night it’s going to be.”

Karstetter has played in only six games this season due to injury.

“Everyone is buying into their roles, including Kyle,” Symons said. “With injuries and coming in late, he’s coming off the bench and killing it for us. Jeremiah (Sibley) only played in the second half, but had some plays that really helped us push the game out. Our guys know that you do what you need to when your number is called, and they did a great job of it tonight.”

NIC (18-0, 6-0 NWAC) travels to Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.

Gabe Hatler had 16 points and three rebounds for Spokane (15-4, 5-2), which is second in the East Region.

SPOKANE — First-year coach Nathan Covill stressed the importance of playing at a different level the Cardinals are on the road.

In the team’s shortest conference trip, his team responded on Saturday.

Addie Kiefer, a freshman from Lakeland High, had 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Cardinals in a Northwest Athletic Conference win over the Sasquatch at Spokane Falls Community College.

“Addie really answered the bell today,” Covill said. “She finished at the basket really well. She’s just been focused on being a presence inside, and did a great job of that today.”

Sophomore Paige Beem had 11 points and 11 rebounds for NIC (9-8, 3-3 NWAC), which outrebounded Spokane 46-24, including 18 to 5 on the offensive end.

“I was really happy with the energy and effort today,” Covill said. “We talked about playing on the road with energy, and was really pleased with how we played today. We’re still working on being more consistent. But when we rebound, we’re a lot more fun to watch.”

Madeline Gebers had 19 points and five rebounds for Spokane (3-11, 3-4).

NIC travels to Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.
