New York Mets comeback falls short in 8-7 loss to Seattle Mariners

The New York Mets came just short of completing a ninth-inning comeback against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon, instead, they fell 8-7 to wrap up the three-game set at Citi Field.

It was the first time this season that the Mets have dropped a series. It was a three-run sixth inning that proved too much for the Mets to overcome as they fell for the second time in their last three games, but it looked as though the Amazons might muster a rally in the ninth down 8-5.

Mets starter Carlos Carrasco threw four and a third innings for New York before exiting the game. He surrendered four runs on eight hits and struck out just two batters during the Mets’ loss.

Chasen Shreve, Drew Smith, Joey Rodriguez and Colin Holderman all came into the game in relief for New York. Holderman was the only reliever not to give up at least one run on Sunday.

Seattle starter Robbie Ray pitched six innings for nine strikeouts and gave up five runs.

The Mariners took control of the game in the sixth when Julio Rodriguez sent a shot to left center field to even the game up at five and then four batters and a pitching change later, Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer to right to give Seattle the 7-5 lead.

Seattle padded its lead in the eighth when Rodriguez hit an RBI single to drive in Jesse Winker, who had doubled in the prior at-bat.

The New York Mets did show some life in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the deficit to two when Jeff McNeil drove home a run on an RBI single. They cut the Mariners’ lead to one when McNeil scored off an RBI double to left field by Patrick Mazeika.

New York had the bases loaded when the Mariners intentionally walked Francisco Lindor, but Pete Alonso struck on a 3-2 slider that just got him to swing to end the game.

Earlier the Mets had taken the lead in the bottom half of the fourth when JD Davis ad Brandon Nimmo each hit RBI triples in a four-run outburst. Alonso had singled to left to open the inning and Mark Canha was walked on four pitches that missed the plate.

That set up Davis’ triple to right that scored the two Met base runners and tie the game at four. A walk to Eduardo Escobar put the go-ahead run on base and set up Nimmo’s three-base hit to right to score Escobar and give New York the brief lead.

The had started off well for the Mets, who opened up the game with a solo shot from Fransisco Lindor in the bottom of the first. It was the Mets shortstop’s sixth home run of the season.

The lead didn’t last long as Seattle scored four runs combined in the third and fourth. Abraham Toro hit a lead-off double to start the third inning and Steven Souza Jr. singled to put runners on the corners. Raleigh grounded into a double play, but Toro scored in the process to tie the game at one.

Two quick hits to start the fourth and a walk loaded the bases, allowing Mike Ford to drive in two runs on a line drive to right to put the Mariners in front. Toro hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Seattle’s fourth run of the game.

The New York Mets will have a quick turnaround as they continue their homestand with a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
