Naomi Osaka withdraws from Melbourne tournament due to injury – Everett Post

(NEW YORK) – Naomi Osaka retired from the Melbourne Summer Set on Saturday due to an abdominal injury and said she needed to rest before the Australian Open.

“I had a lot of fun playing here in Melbourne. Unfortunately, I have an abdominal injury that I need to recover and prepare for the #AusOpen. Many thanks to the tournament and the fans, ”said Naomi Osaka in a statement published by the Australian Open on Twitter.

“I’m sad to have to retire from my game today due to an injury. My body went into shock after playing intense games in a row after the break,” Osaka said on Twitter.

Osaka was due to play in a semi-final game on the day they retired. Your planned opponent Veronika Kudermetova will move into the final straight away.

The Australian Open is slated to begin on January 17th.

Osaka and Australian tennis officials did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
