Meet your communities at National Night Out Aug. 2
SNOHOMISH COUNTY — Come see demonstrations by your police and fire departments and get to know the community better at a National Night Out event in your town and neighborhood.
Events are happening near you on Tuesday, Aug 2, from Willis Tucker Park to Lake Tye Park to the city of Snohomish’s event at Averill Field. In Everett, multiple neighborhoods are hosting National Night Out gatherings. Most everything is free.
Snohomish
Snohomish’s organizer Terry Lippincott said “it’s going to be great to be back.” Snohomish didn’t have a National Night Out in 2020 or 2021 because of factors involving COVID-19 restrictions.
Tuesday’s event will be 4 to 6 pm at Averill Field, at Third and Pine avenues.
The Snohomish Kiwanis will be giving away bicycle helmets; the Lions will have free snow cones for everybody. City Councilman David Flynn will be showing his mastery in chalk art and teaching how.
Police Chief Rob Palmer secured the county’s “Kids Copter” to explore up close. It’s a decommissioned Army Bell OH-58 that had a second life with Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue.
Snohomish Fire will demonstrate backboard rescues and bring their rigs.
The Lions are hosting two simultaneous croquet games for people to jump into.
Plus, face painting, taekwondo board-breaking demonstrations and the Snohomish County League of Women Voters will be offering voter registration signups. The Snohomish Library plans to bring brochures for children and teens to color.
Parking is available at the Snohomish Library and Boys & Girls Club, Lippincott said.
monroe
Monroe’s event at Lake Tye Park, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, attracts a huge crowd.
Monroe’s attendance figures are “often with a comma,” meaning a few thousand people, said business owner and Monroe Rotary’s past president Sally Petty. The Rotary puts it on jointly with the Monroe Police Department.
The Police Department will display the SWAT truck and motorcycles and show how they do fingerprinting, and more, the department’s Community Service Officer Gaby Escalante said. The German Shepherd dog K-9 Tango will demonstrate his takedown skills.
Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue plans to conduct a firefighter challenge and bring its trucks, spokesman Peter Mongillo said.
There will also be bouncy houses, a scavenger hunt and the Department of Corrections will give away refurbished bicycles, Petty said.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for people to meet their police department,” Escalante said, and a favorite for officers to attend.
Everett
There will be National Night Out events across Everett.
The Bayside Neighborhood’s event will be 6-8 pm at Clark Park, Lombard Avenue. Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop will be there and you can get a free ice cream from Yay Big Yay High Yay Ice Cream’s imported Honda microvan, the neighborhood says.
The Riverside Neighborhood’s will be 5 to 8 pm at Garfield Park, 2325 Highland Park.
The Lowell Neighborhood’s event will be 5 to 7 pm at Lowell Park, 4605 S. 3rd Ave.
Pinehurst/Beverly Park holds theirs 6 to 8 pm at Lions Park, 7530 Cascade Drive.
View Ridge Madison’s event will be 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the parking lot of Praise Chapel, 710 Pecks Drive.
Westmont-Holly’s will be 5 to 7 pm at Walter E. Hall Park on Casino Road.
Get to meet Everett’s Mayor Cassie Franklin. The mayor plans to visit as many as possible. City Council members stop by as well.

Tuesday, Aug. 2 is also when primary election ballots are due by 8 pm
The first iteration happened in 1984 where neighbors were encouraged to spend time out on their porch as a visible show of vigilance against crime.
The Tuesday night City Council meetings in Snohomish and Monroe are canceled.
