Thousands of dead fish are washed up on the banks of the Mystic River in Everett. Experts reported to the Globe that similar massive fish deaths have occurred at least twice in recent years. The fish known as pogies often travel in large schools and it is likely that they were chased into the Mystic River by a predator, experts said. According to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, natural fish deaths are generally the result of low oxygen levels, fish disease, or spawning stress. Dissolved oxygen depletion is one of the most common causes of natural fish death. Water contains less dissolved oxygen at higher temperatures; Oxygen can be particularly low in shallow, weedy ponds, as plants consume oxygen at night. Neighbors complain about the stench.
