NTSB wants to recover aircraft wreckage after fatal crash in Alaska

Juneau, Alaska (AP) – Federal investigators seek to recover the wreckage of a sightseeing plane that crashed in southeast Alaska, killing six. But fog and poor visibility hampered Sunday’s efforts. Clint Johnson, Alaska region chief of the National Transportation Safety Board, says the wreck was in a rugged, steep area that is heavily forested. On Sunday afternoon, he said the NTSB team stayed in a weather station and could not reach the location. Meanwhile, the Alaska State Troopers on Saturday disclosed the identities of the pilot and five people aboard the plane that crashed Thursday. Soldiers said the bodies were recovered.

VIRUS OUTBREAK REBREAKLESS DRIVERS

The pandemic has sparked a fatal increase in speeding that hasn’t stopped

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Motorists have felt the need to speed up during the pandemic, a worrying trend as the roads get busier with the final leg of the summer trip. The number of road deaths in 2020 was the highest in more than a decade, despite the fact that cars and trucks drove fewer kilometers during the pandemic and motorists continued to drive through traffic at speed, tailgate and zigzag. California Highway Patrol tickets for speeding more than 160 mph from January through June were nearly double what they were before the pandemic. The New York State Police say both the percentage of deaths where speeding was a major factor and the number of parking tickets increased over the same period.

A New Jersey gym owner and a Washington state man become the first indicted in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol of pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer during the deadly siege. The two plea deals with federal prosecutors could be a benchmark for dozens of other cases. Scott Fairlamb, 44, of Stockholm, New Jersey, was caught on video pushing and beating a police officer in the head after leaving the Capitol. The Public Service Alliance of Canada and its Customs and Immigration Union started a strike just days before fully vaccinated U.S. citizens can visit Canada without being quarantined.
