Kitsap County’s COVID cases up 9.7%; Washington cases surge 13.4%

In the week that ended Sunday, Washington new coronavirus cases jumped 13.4% as 21,159 cases were reported. In the previous week there were 18,654 new cases of the virus that is causing COVID-19.

Washington was ranked 21st among the states where coronavirus spread fastest per person, according to an analysis by the USA TODAY Network of data from Johns Hopkins University. Last week, coronavirus cases in the United States rose 12.7% from the previous week, with 1,031,057 cases reported. At 2.29% of the country’s population, Washington had 2.05% of the country’s cases last week. Across the country, 44 states had more cases in the past week than the week before.

Kitsap County reported 597 cases and four deaths in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 544 cases and four deaths. 10,789 cases and 129 deaths were reported throughout the pandemic.

Mason County reported 207 cases and one death in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 157 cases and one death. 3,500 cases and 41 deaths were reported during the pandemic.

Washington had the worst weekly outbreaks per person in Franklin, Benton, and Grant Counties. Most of the total new cases were King County with 4,218 cases; Pierce County with 2,794 cases; and Snohomish County at 1,960. The weekly number of cases has increased in 35 districts compared to the previous week. The worst increases from the previous week’s pace were in Spokane, Yakima and Snohomish counties.

Washington ranked 12th among states for the proportion of people who received at least one vaccination, with 66.6% of its residents being at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 60.7%, an analysis of USA TODAY’s CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are most commonly used in the United States, require two doses given a few weeks apart.

In the week that ended Sunday, Washington reported that an additional 119,473 doses of vaccine had been administered, including 68,662 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 101,940 vaccine doses, including 64,158 initial doses. In total, Washington reported that it delivered 9,334,052 total doses.

Across Washington, cases fell in four counties, with the highest decreases in King, Stevens, and Asotin counties.

In Washington, 117 people were reported dead from COVID-19 in the week to Sunday. The previous week, 71 people were reported dead.

A total of 528,453 people in Washington have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 6,356 people have died from the disease, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. In the United States, 37,709,810 people tested positive and 628,503 people have died.
