SPOKANE, Washington – The Juneteenth has been celebrated by people across the country for years. This time it is recognized as a federal holiday.

Spokane Councilor Betsy Wilkerson helped organize events for the weekend. This will be the 10th local June celebration, but for the first time as an official federal holiday.

“I’m the most excited, this is really about history. People come together, ”Wilkerson told 4 News Now. “Simply from the heart. I hope the rest of Spokane and America really understand what it means for us to be recognized and a part of this county. “

Events take place throughout the weekend. A full list of events can be found here.
