If you’re voting or running, get ready for Everett’s districts

Letters

This year, if you live in Everett City, elect a city council member from the same geographic district that you live in. Five districts were set up by a district commission that set the boundaries in October. Now, for the first time, voters will elect a councilor who lives near them and is only elected by voters who live in the same district. All five districts will elect their representatives in 2021. The two council members elected in total will stand for election in 2023. You can find the district you live in www.bit.ly/3qRIPle by entering your address in the bar.

The residency requirement for a district seat on the city council is to be a registered voter, to live in the city for at least one year prior to the general election, and to live in the district for at least six months prior to the area code. If you are interested in this post, contact the Electoral and Voter Registration Office now to find out what it takes to put your name on the ballot. The week for submitting candidates is May 17-21. The first election will take place on August 3rd. You can get started with the following link: www.bit.ly/3sTfE2R.

Everett Districts Now, a grassroots civic coalition, has been working to bring a more representative government to Everett since 2016. In 2018, voters decided to elect five council members from geographic districts. Now, in 2021, voters will decide who these county council members will be. Now is the time to take a step forward to guide yourself or convince a guide who lives near you to take the vote.

Local engagement builds a representative government.
