Hershel Everett Anthony, age 90, of Temple, died Monday | Obituaries

Hershel Everett Anthony, 90, died in Temple, Texas on November 29, 2021. He was born on May 11, 1931 to the late Lon Anthony and Izada Waldo Anthony in Checotah, Oklahoma. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by three siblings in death, Opal Lyles, James Anthony and Mary Blackburn.

Everett served in the service for more than 50 years. After pastoring churches in Missouri and Illinois, he was named a missionary on the SBC Home Mission Board from 1978 to 1991, which served as the executive director of the Chicago Metropolitan Baptist Association. He then served as the National Director of the Metropolitan Missions on the Home Mission Board from 1991 to 1994.

In later years he served churches through Urban Church Leadership and worked helping churches flourish until his 1980s.

He was a Marine Corps veteran and a graduate of Oklahoma State University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He leaves behind his 66-year-old wife, Nancy Clayton Anthony; Daughter Sherri Brown (Greg) from LaGrange, Georgia; and son Gary Anthony (Jan) of Temple, Texas; Grandson Hannah Brown Bethune (Brian), Chelsea Brown, Jenna Brown, Kylie Anthony, Rachel Anthony Barton (Christopher); and great-nephew Jason Anthony (Theresa). He is also survived by a brother, Charles Anthony of Racine, Wisconsin, and a sister, Betty Laramie of Oran, Missouri.

The funeral will take place on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Temple, under the direction of Dr. Joe Loughlin and Dr. Greg Brown instead. The family will greet friends after the service.

A family funeral will be held at a later date at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

Instead of flowers, the family will seek donations to commemorate Music Ministry, First Baptist Church Temple, 8015 W Adams Ave, Temple, TX 76502 or Circles of Troup County, 1220 Lafayette Pkwy., LaGrange, GA 30241.
