Hello Sugar expands Kendall Yards location in Spokane

Hello Sugar has acquired the lease for the entire building it shares with Indaba Coffee Roasters in Kendall Yards.

Indaba announced the transaction for its 419 N. Nettleton St. location in a Facebook post last week. The last day of operation of the café in the building was Sunday.

“It enables (Hello Sugar) to achieve what they dream of in space,” said Indaba owner Bobby Enslow in an interview on Monday about the sale. “Right from the start, my heart was to give them the opportunity to grow and create something.”

Enslow has teamed up with Hello Sugar owners Amy and Ramsey Pruchnic to open a coffee shop and pop-up donut shop in the communal building in 2018.

Hello Sugar was originally intended as a “fun side project” but quickly grew into a bigger than expected business as its bite-size donuts grew in popularity.

That took up more space, said Amy Pruchnic.

“When we first opened Hello Sugar, we thought we’d hire some college students and do this fun side project and then it blew up,” said Amy Pruchnic.

The donut shop had a line of customers around the building on opening day, she said.

Financial terms of the lease were not disclosed.

Hello Sugar’s purchase of Indaba’s lease for the Nettleton Street building coincides with the decision to permanently close the Spokane Valley shop, which has been in operation in Ponderosa Village at 11205 E. Dishman-Mica Road since 2019.

Hello Sugar’s Liberty Lake location will remain open.

“When we opened our second and third locations, we realized we wanted to offer coffee with donuts,” said Amy Pruchnic. “It has been a long time coming and it makes sense for a company to be in the (Nettleton Street) area.”

The decision to close Hello Sugar’s Spokane Valley site was a move that “made real sense for the future,” said Pruchnic.

Spokane Valley store staff are moving to Hello Sugar’s Kendall Yards and Liberty Lake locations, Pruchnic said.

Hello Sugar is opening an espresso bar in the former Indaba Square serving Evans Brothers Coffee.

The espresso bar is expected to be open until Wednesday, said Pruchnic.

Hello Sugar plans to include ice cream and sweets as well as hearty breakfast dishes in its menu in the future.

“We’re excited to show people how Hello Sugar makes coffee and have a fun new experience at the Kendall Yards site,” she said.

“We want the community to know and understand that both companies have a deep love for each other, and we are excited to see where the other will go in the future.”

Indaba’s deal with Hello Sugar comes after opening a coffee shop in downtown Spokane at 210 N. Howard St.

Despite the closure, Indaba will have a presence in the community as its other stores in the Spokane area remain open.

Enslow has plans for a new cafe in Yakima.

“We’re not going anywhere,” he said.

“Our heart has always been to love people through our business. This is just another way for us to love Hello Sugar and the community through them. “
