Fourth week football preview: The first clash of the titans of the Greater Spokane League as Central Valley, Mt. Spokane competes

The old, well-worn epilogue diatribe from former Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green, who said, “They are what we thought they were,” aside acting, could return to the ranks of the Greater Spokane League 4A this season / 3A apply.

Gonzaga Prep, Central Valley and Mt. Spokane all won last week with an overall result of 133-3. We’re getting the first showdown between the “Big 3” this week.

In 2A, Shadle Park and Clarkston took league wins last week in hopes of gaining an early advantage over the competition.

All games Friday, 7pm, unless otherwise stated.

Game of the week

Central Valley (2-1) on Mt. Spokane (2-0): In the first Clash of the Titans in 2021, the Wildcats will receive the Bears at the Union Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Why 7:30 and not 7?

The referee crew will officiate for an early game and won’t arrive at Union Stadium for a 7pm kick, so it’s been postponed for half an hour (let’s hope that’s all, for those with deadlines).

Once they get started it should be as fun a game as it is every year. CV and Mt. Spokane like moving the ball to many players on offense, and both have strong defenses.

This is an appointment display.

4A / 3A

Met (2-1, 2-1) at Gonzaga Prep (3-0, 2-0): The Panthers took care of U-Hi 24-7 as Colby Danielson rushed to two second-half touchdowns on Saturday, giving first-year coach Keith Stamps a big league win. It’ll be a great morale booster against G-Prep, who so far looks unstoppable on the offensive (144 points in three games) and on the defensive (nine points allowed).

Ridgeline (0-3, 0-3) at the university (1-2, 1-2): Coach Dave Myers and his Falcons are still looking for their first win in program history. Will it come up against a Titans squad this week who dealt with Cheney two weeks ago but handed him over from Mead last week?

Cheney (0-3) in the West Valley (1-1): The Blackhawks are playing a non-league game against former Great Northern foe West Valley this week, but a winless Cheney isn’t having an easy time of it. The Eagles looked good beating 1A Newport in Week 1, but not so good last week against Idaho 4A Lakeland.

Ferris (2-1, 2-1) in Lewis and Clark (1-2, 1-1): At Union Stadium, 7 p.m. Thursday Both teams turned it upside down last week. The Saxons lost the traffic jam Kruz Wheeler after three offensive games and looked lost the rest of the way on the offensive. LC, meanwhile, traveled to East Wenatchee to compete against the League’s honorary member Eastmont (third game against the GSL 4A team this season) and was beaten.

2A

Pullman (0-3, 0-0) at Clarkston (1-2, 1-0): The Bantams entered the Victory Column against North Central last week after suffering some heavy defeats against the Idaho schools in the first two weeks. The greyhounds have 14 points in three weeks against ranked opponents, so they’re looking for opportunities.

Rogers (0-3, 0-1) at North Central (1-1, 0-1): The Pirates got a boost from their first game on campus since 2002 and are hoping two TDs in the fourth quarter last week heralds good things. The Wolfpack has been up and down a bit, looking for consistency this week.

East Valley (1-0, 0-0) in Shadle Park (1-1, 1-0): Saturday 1pm The Knights haven’t played since September 3rd, so they’re just looking forward to being back on the field. Shadle gets a real home game this week with the chance to take the lead two games in front of several league opponents.

Idaho

Lakeland (3-0) at Post Falls (1-3): A chance for the Hawks to prove they’re a contender in Idaho 4A.

Moscow (3-1) in Lake City (1-2): Like Lakeland, the Bears hope to get a North Idaho 5A team out of the way.

Lewiston (4-0) at Sandpoint (1-2): The Bengals surprise a lot of people early on, but don’t let the Bulldogs’ track record fool you.

Coeur d’Alene (2-1) at Skyview (WA) (3-0): Saturday 4pm The Vikings fled to North Creek from Bothell, Washington last week and escaped using a stuffed 2-point conversion to OT. The Storm from Vancouver, Washington meets the Vikings at Roos Field in Cheney.
